Varun Chakaravarthy: The Mystery Spinner Making Waves in Indian Cricket
Varun Chakaravarthy is a name that has been making waves in the cricket world in recent years. This young spinner has taken the Indian Premier League (IPL) by storm and has become a crucial player for his team, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). But who is Varun Chakaravarthy, and what makes him so unique?
Early Life and Career
Varun Chakaravarthy was born on August 29, 1991, in Bidar, Karnataka. He grew up in Tamil Nadu and was introduced to cricket by his father, who was a club-level cricketer. Varun started playing cricket at a young age and was primarily a wicket-keeper batsman during his school days. However, he switched to bowling spin after he joined the college team.
Varun’s journey in cricket was not an easy one. He was initially rejected by the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) teams in 2018, but he did not lose hope. He continued to play for his college team and worked hard on his game. Eventually, he was picked up by the Siechem Madurai Panthers in the TNPL, where he performed exceptionally well. His performances in the TNPL caught the eye of the KKR scouts, who picked him up in the IPL auction in 2019.
IPL Career
Varun Chakaravarthy made his IPL debut for KKR in 2019, but he only played one game that season. He was not retained by the franchise for the 2020 season, but they bought him back in the auction for a whopping INR 4 crore. Varun repaid the faith shown in him by the KKR management with some outstanding performances in the 2020 IPL.
He finished the season with 17 wickets in 13 matches, with an economy rate of just 6.84. His best performance came against the Delhi Capitals, where he took 5 wickets for just 20 runs. Varun’s performances in the IPL earned him a call-up to the Indian national team for the T20I series against Australia in 2020.
Unique Skill Set
What makes Varun Chakaravarthy unique is his bowling style. He is a mystery spinner who has a range of variations in his repertoire. Varun’s bowling action is also unconventional, which makes it difficult for batsmen to pick his deliveries. He has a unique grip on the ball, which allows him to bowl different variations such as the carrom ball, the leg-break, the googly, and the off-break.
Varun is also a very intelligent bowler who reads the game well. He understands the strengths and weaknesses of the batsmen he is bowling to and adjusts his bowling accordingly. His ability to bowl in the powerplay and at the death makes him a valuable asset for any team.
