The International Cricket Council (ICC) oversees the World Test Championship, an international cricket competition. Its goal is to identify the world’s top Test cricket squad during a two-year span.
The first World Test Championship started in August 2019 and ended with the championship game in June 2021. The tournament pitted the top nine Test teams against one another in a series of bilateral Test series. Points were given depending on the outcomes of the Test matches that made up each series, which varied in number.
A team could gain 120 points for winning a series, regardless of how many games were played in the series. In the event of a series tie, the points were distributed according to the number of victories each side had. In the event of a tie, the points available for that series were split equally between the two teams. The teams’ total points also reflected how well they did in each of their individual matches.
The top two teams with the greatest point totals at the conclusion of the qualification stage earned a spot in the championship game, which decided the World Test Championship victor. The championship game was a stand-alone contest held at a neutral site.
India and New Zealand competed in the World Test Championship’s inaugural final from June 18 to June 22, 2021, at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton, England. After defeating India by 8 wickets, New Zealand won the title.
After the first cycle of the World Test Championship has finished, the following cycle is anticipated to start. The ICC has not yet revealed the specifics of the upcoming competition, including the qualification process and championship game.
