IPL 2024: Veteran New Zealander Daniel Vettori has been named the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming IPL season. Brian Lara, a former captain of the West Indies, will be replaced by Vettori. After the team’s disappointing season-long performance, Lara was fired from his position.
In the IPL, Vettori has led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Vettori most recently served as the assistant coach of the Australia men’s team and served as the head coach of RCB from 2014 to 2018.
Prior to the 2023 IPL season, Lara took over as the Sunrisers’ head coach in place of Tom Moody, but the team finished last (tenth) with four victories and ten defeats. With Vettori’s hiring, Sunrisers will have five different head coaches in their first six seasons. The previous Sunrisers head coaches were Moody (2019), Trevor Bayliss (2020 and 2021), Moody once more (2022), and Lara (2023). In 2020, the Hyderabad team last advanced to the IPL playoffs.
Through May 2022, Vettori will be the head coach of the men’s team for the Birmingham Phoenix in “The Hundred.” In the past, he served as the Bangladesh team’s spin bowling consultant. Vettori guided RCB to the playoffs in 2015 and the final in 2016 during his final season as an IPL coach. By the way, the RCB team under Vettori’s coaching had fallen to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2016 championship game.
