Jasprit Bumrah is a name that strikes fear in the hearts of many batsmen across the cricketing world. Known for his unique bowling action and ability to bowl toe-crushing yorkers, Bumrah has quickly risen to become one of the best fast bowlers in the world.
Early Life and Career
On December 6, 1993, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Jasprit Bumrah was born. He was raised by his mother and grandmother, as his father passed away when he was just seven years old. Bumrah started playing cricket at a young age and played for the Gujarat Under-19 team. However, he was initially more interested in playing tennis ball cricket, which he played in the streets of Ahmedabad.
Bumrah’s breakthrough came in 2013, when he was spotted by John Wright, the former New Zealand cricketer, and coach of the Mumbai Indians IPL team. Wright was impressed with Bumrah’s unique bowling action and signed him to play for the Mumbai Indians. Bumrah made his IPL debut in 2013 and quickly made a name for himself with his accurate yorkers and ability to bowl at the death.
International Career
Bumrah made his international debut for India in 2016, in a T20I match against Australia. He had an impressive debut, taking 3 wickets for just 23 runs. Bumrah’s ability to bowl accurate yorkers and slower balls at the death made him an instant hit in the T20 format, and he soon became a regular member of the Indian T20 team.
Bumrah’s Test debut came in 2018, in a match against South Africa. He took his first Test wicket in his first over and went on to take five wickets in the match. Bumrah’s ability to bowl at a high pace and swing the ball both ways made him a potent threat in the longer format of the game.
Bumrah’s rise to fame continued in the 2019 World Cup, where he was India’s leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets in just 9 matches. He was particularly impressive in the death overs, where he took crucial wickets and kept the opposition’s scoring rate in check.
Bowling Style
What sets Bumrah apart from other fast bowlers is his unique bowling action. Instead of the traditional side-on action, Bumrah has a front-on action, where he runs in and delivers the ball with a straight arm. This action allows him to generate more pace and bounce than other bowlers, and also gives him greater control over the ball.
Bumrah’s accuracy is also a key strength. He is able to bowl yorkers and slower balls with pinpoint accuracy, making it difficult for batsmen to score off him. Bumrah’s ability to swing the ball both ways also makes him a potent threat in all conditions
