Even before the start of IPL 2024, Mumbai Indians had appointed Hardik Pandya as the captain of MI in place of Rohit Sharma. A few days before the start of the IPL season, MS Dhoni had also handed over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings to Indian batsman Rituraj Gaikwad. It is believed that this is going to be Dhoni’s last season as a player.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan said that he feels that Rohit Sharma will play for Chennai in IPL 2025 and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s tenure as CSK captain may be limited only till 2024. Vaughan said that Rohit can be a good replacement for MS Dhoni.
Michael Vaughan said in a podcaster, ‘I think he (Rohit) will go to Chennai, will replace MS Dhoni. Gaikwad is doing this this year. Do you think this is just a holding job? Maybe Rohit next year? He further said, ‘I see him in Chennai. I see him there. If he had captained Chennai and came to Mumbai, would he have been criticized? Vaughan asked, he feels that Rohit will captain CSK next year.
Vaughan further said, ‘Every cricketer in India wants to be the captain of MI… I personally would have kept Rohit. Hardik’s return to Mumbai after a successful World Cup is a huge pressure in itself. Obviously, captaining India in the T20 World Cup would be a wise decision. He went on to say, “It would have been better if Rohit had been captain this year and Hardik had been captain the following year or beyond.”
